Royal William, a name that has been touring Quebec

Royal William Hotel is located near major shipyards whose vessels have long been the pride of Quebec and England. In the early 1800s, Quebec is among the most important ports in the world.

It is in Quebec City that the first steamship was built on behalf of "Quebec and Halifax Steam Navigation Company”. One of the owners of the company was Samuel Cunard, whose name is always associated with floating-hotels which have become liners. When launching the first steamboat in Quebec City on April 29, 1831, all-Quebec saluted the Royal William, this marvel of technology at the time.

In 1833, the ship called the Royal William became the first steamboat to cross the Atlantic Ocean only through the propelling force. This first voyage, completed in record time of 22 days, remains a great success of Canadian technology.

Several hundred books have been dedicated to the Royal William, most of them written in Shakespeare’s language. In 1894, the government of Canada emphasized by a special mention, the audacity, courage, skill and entrepreneurial spirit of the shipbuilding artisans of Quebec City. In 1933, Canada Post produced a stamp with the effigy of William Royal (stamp much sought) to commemorate the centenary of this audacious journey.

In giving this name to our hotel, we naturally wanted to show our pride in one aspect of the history of Quebec City. But it was also about a small reminder of this former industrial area and business district of Quebec City that became the New Downtown, a place where boldness and innovation have taken citizenship.
